The making of corner

Process Book | Cover, Layout, Typesetting, & Content

While the punchy “top 10 list” format of “the six best ways…” clickbait articles seems to do a good job of driving web traffic, in this conceptual project I wanted to explore the idea of a business magazine that takes time to think about the business of doing business.

And with this in mind, I created corner magazine.

But what I share here is the book The Making of corner magazine.

The design of corner reflects a literary style, with generous white space and a visually comfortable page composition. At the same time, visual interrupts of both pictures and typography help to keep the reader engaged. Additional details, such as “corner” themed section break lines, visual puzzles in the endsheets, and color coordinated pages and endmarks provide visual stimulation for the reader, with the intellectual reward of having figured out “insider secrets.”

In this book, I wanted to detail the process used, and showcase some of the early design ideas and decisions that lead to the final form of this conceptual project.

Design is process of creative problem solving as applied to challenge of controlling how a user (i.e. a reader) interacts with their environment (i.e. the book). While Book Design isn’t writing, editing, or illustration, it affects the success of all three. It is part production minded, and part visual story-telling.
